Urban Forest Update – Brooklyn

Attention Brooklyn residents, we have a fantastic panel lined up to update you on amazing urban forestry projects happening in your borough, plus learn more about the upcoming citywide Urban Forest Plan and how you can get involved. 

Presenters include Sam Bishop, Director of Education at Trees New York, Nina Browne, Brooklyn Botanic Garden Community Field Manager and Scott Middleton, Executive Direcor, Marine Park Alliance.

Presentation moderated by Nelson Villarrubia, Executive Director, Trees New York.

• Find out how Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s free community greening programs—such as the Greenest Block in Brooklyn contest and the Brooklyn Urban Gardener (BUG) certificate—help build community power while supporting local street trees, block by block. Presenters: Nina Browne, BBG community field manager, and Brandon Otis, BBG BUG tree steward and Greenest Block Veteran.

• Learn more about the Marine Park Alliance, their mission, and how they are engaging volunteers to care for the trees in this beautiful 798-acre park. Presenter: Scott Middleton, Executive Director, Marine Park Alliance.

• Learn more about Trees New York’s Trees For NYCHA project. Trees New York’s Arborist, Sam Bishop, will discuss Trees New York’s most recent planting project on and around NYCHA sites in NYC that lost trees due to superstorm Sandy. He will discuss how species decisions were made to try to mitigate future storm damage and working around new storm resiliency infrastructure. He will also discuss how the newly planted trees fit into NYCHA’s larger tree population, thanks to the inventory of NYCHA trees that was done by Green City Force.  Presenters: Sam Bishop, Education Director.

Also, you will receive an update on the city-wide urban forest Plan. New York City is creating the first urban forestry plan, which will focus on best practices in maintaining and expanding the tree canopy and community engagement.
