Tree Plantings

Every new tree improves the health and beauty of the city and offers a valuable learning opportunity. Throughout the last 10 years, Trees New York has planted over 6,500 trees throughout the five boroughs!

New York City is home to over 7 million trees, forming an urban forest that is as vibrant and diverse as the city itself. This living network includes not just the trees lining our streets and parks, but also those growing along highways, railways, hospital and school campuses, rooftop gardens, cemeteries, botanic gardens, and even empty lots. Together, these trees, shrubs, and plants create a green canopy that benefits us all in countless ways.

New York’s urban forest is truly a citywide treasure and its trees are critical infrastructure. Trees cool our neighborhoods, clean our air, support wildlife, and makes our city more beautiful and livable every day.

At Trees New York, we believe every new tree is a chance for learning and community building. Our tree planting programs are collaborative efforts with neighborhood associations, public schools, libraries, senior centers, and community gardens. Before planting, we work with our partners to assess sites and develop both short- and long-term care plans. We provide lessons on tree biology, planting, and maintenance, along with all the necessary tools and supplies.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air temperatures in cities, particularly after sunset, can be as much as 22 degrees F warmer than the air in neighboring, less developed regions. Learn how we are combating the urban heat island effect by Greening the Bronx.
